"That's when I knew it was pretty good," she said. "I always figured it would be more scary if the parent has the invisible friend," Sandberg explained on the panel. Lights Out reveals Diana's motive is to kill anybody seeking to get Sophie treatment, which includes her children. Lights Out opens with a near beat-for-beat recreation of the short, albeit in the gloomy textile factory workplace of Paul (Billy Burke). It stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello. Sandberg in his directorial debut, produced by Lawrence Grey, James Wan, and Eric Heisserer and written by Heisserer. In death, Diana's spirit tethered herself to Sophie and has been with her since childhood, and later caused the death of her husband when he tried to get her help.
